Bone union
Also called: fracture consolidation, healed fracture
What it means
Bone union means a broken bone has fully healed and the two ends have knit back together with new bone, restoring enough strength for normal use.
Knowing how healing is tracked helps you understand recovery timelines and why your doctor may delay full weight-bearing or activity after a fracture.
Bone union, also called fracture consolidation or a healed fracture, is the end point of the natural healing process after a break. It happens when the body forms a bridge of new bone, called callus, across the fracture site, and that callus matures and remodels into solid bone strong enough to handle normal loads again.
Healing happens in stages: first a blood clot and inflammation at the break, then soft callus forms, which hardens into bony callus, and finally the bone remodels over time to restore its original shape and strength. Doctors check progress with X-rays and by assessing pain and stability, since union isn't always obvious from how you feel.
Sometimes healing doesn't go as planned. A delayed union takes longer than expected, a nonunion means the bone never fully knits together, and a malunion means it heals but in a crooked or shifted position. Your doctor or surgeon decides whether healing is on track and whether extra steps, like bracing, surgery, or adjusting activity, are needed.
Bone union means a fracture has fully healed and regained enough strength for normal use.
