What it means

Crohn's disease is a digestive condition that inflames and damages the gut lining, which can reduce the body's ability to absorb calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients bones need.

Why it matters for your bones

If you have Crohn's disease, your bones may be affected by poor nutrient absorption, so understanding this helps explain bone density results and guides the right follow-up care.

Crohn's disease is a condition that causes inflammation in the digestive tract, and it can damage the lining of the gut. This matters for bone health because that lining is where your body absorbs calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients bones need. When absorption is reduced, even a well-balanced diet may not deliver enough of these building blocks to your bloodstream.

Because of this, someone with Crohn's disease can have lower bone density, but the cause is different from someone whose low density comes from an inactive lifestyle. Bone-related issues with Crohn's disease are sometimes made more complex by other factors, like steroid medications used to manage the condition, which can further affect bones.

This is why a DEXA scan result alone doesn't tell the full story. Two people can have the same bone density number for very different reasons, and figuring out whether Crohn's disease, medication use, or malabsorption is involved helps point toward the right kind of medical follow-up.
