What it means

An estrogen receptor is a protein in bone cells that estrogen attaches to, helping control how bone is built and broken down.

Why it matters for your bones

Estrogen receptor signaling helps keep bone breakdown in check, so lower estrogen activity can speed up bone loss in both women and men.

Estrogen receptors are proteins found inside bone cells, including osteoblasts (bone builders) and osteoclasts (bone remodelers). When estrogen attaches to these receptors, it sends signals that help slow down bone breakdown and support healthy bone turnover. This happens in both women and men, since the body makes estrogen from other hormones too.

In men, testosterone works partly on its own through androgen receptors, but some of it also converts into estradiol, a form of estrogen, through a process called aromatization. That estradiol then binds to estrogen receptors in bone. Research on men with rare conditions affecting aromatase or estrogen receptors shows they can develop severe bone loss even with normal testosterone levels, showing how essential estrogen receptor signaling is for bone health in both sexes.

When estrogen levels drop, such as during menopause or with certain treatments like androgen deprivation therapy, there's less signaling through these receptors, and bone breakdown tends to speed up. This is one reason bone density can decline faster during these life stages. Any concerns about hormone levels or bone loss should be discussed with a doctor, who can review testing and treatment options suited to you.
