Fluid shear stress
Also called: shear stress bone, canalicular fluid shear
What it means
Fluid shear stress is the drag force that fluid inside bone creates against bone cells when you move or bear weight, helping bone sense how much load it's under.
It's part of how your bones "feel" movement and decide whether to build, maintain, or lose strength over time.
Fluid shear stress happens inside your bones every time you move. Bone tissue has a tiny network of fluid-filled channels called canaliculi, and when you walk, lift, or jump, the mechanical load squeezes bone and pushes that fluid past osteocytes, the main sensor cells living inside bone. The dragging motion of fluid over these cells is the "shear stress."
This matters because osteocytes use fluid shear stress as a signal to figure out whether bone needs to get stronger, stay the same, or can afford to lose some density. It's part of a larger sensing system scientists call mechanotransduction — basically bone's way of turning physical force into a biological message.
Researchers think this fluid movement helps explain why weight-bearing and resistance activity send a different signal to bone cells than long periods of inactivity or bed rest. It's one piece of a much bigger, still-evolving picture of how bones sense and respond to the forces we put on them.
Fluid shear stress lets bone sense movement, helping it decide whether to build, maintain, or lose strength.
Where this leads
WordFluid shear stress is felt by specific bone cells. Meet the cells that sense this force and direct bone building or breakdown.
