What it means

Height loss is when you become noticeably shorter than you were in your younger years, often an inch or more over time. It can be an early warning sign of weakened spine bones.

Why it matters for your bones

Losing height can signal silent vertebral compression fractures from osteoporosis, so it's worth telling your doctor.

Height loss happens gradually with age for many reasons, including normal disc thinning between the vertebrae and changes in posture. But losing a noticeable amount of height, especially more than an inch or two, can be a sign that the bones in your spine (vertebral bodies) are weakening and compressing, sometimes without any pain you'd notice.

When vertebrae lose density, they can develop small compression fractures that make them collapse slightly in height. Over time, many small fractures add up, leading to a stooped posture or kyphosis, along with measurable height loss. This is often how osteoporosis shows up in the spine before any dramatic event like a fall.

If you've noticed you're shorter than you used to be, it's reasonable to mention it at your next doctor visit. They may suggest a bone density scan or spine imaging to check for compression fractures. Tracking your height yearly, standing against a wall without shoes, is a simple way to catch changes early.
