What it means

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disorder that causes the body to make fragile collagen, leading to bones that break easily.

Why it matters for your bones

Understanding this condition helps explain why some bone fragility comes from genetics rather than aging or lifestyle, which matters for how it's approached.

Osteogenesis imperfecta, often called brittle bone disease, is a genetic disorder that causes the body to produce fragile collagen. Collagen is a key building block of bone, giving it flexibility and strength alongside minerals. When collagen isn't formed properly, bones become weaker and more prone to breaking, even with little force.

This condition is different from osteoporosis, which is a loss of bone density that typically develops over time. Osteogenesis imperfecta is present from birth because of the underlying genetic issue with collagen, rather than being caused by changes in the remodeling process later in life. Still, both conditions result in bones that are more fragile than normal.

It's one of several distinct bone disorders, alongside things like Paget's disease, osteomalacia, and avascular necrosis, each of which affects bone in its own way. If you or a family member has this condition, it's best managed with a qualified medical team familiar with your specific history and needs.
