Osteon
Also called: Haversian system, osteons
What it means
An osteon is the basic structural unit of hard, compact bone. It's a tiny cylinder made of rings of bone tissue wrapped around a central canal that carries blood vessels and nerves.
Osteons make up the dense outer shell of your bones, so their health affects how strong and fracture-resistant your skeleton is.
An osteon, also called a Haversian system, is the repeating building block of cortical (compact) bone — the hard, dense tissue that forms the outer shell of bones like the femur, tibia, and vertebrae. Picture a tiny tube made of concentric rings, almost like a miniature tree trunk cross-section, with a central channel running through the middle.
That central channel, called the Haversian canal, carries blood vessels and nerves that feed the bone cells embedded in the surrounding rings, known as lamellae. Within those rings, bone cells called osteocytes sit in small spaces called lacunae, connected by tiny channels so nutrients and signals can pass between them.
Osteons aren't permanent — bone is constantly being broken down and rebuilt in a process called remodeling, and old osteons get replaced by new ones over your lifetime. This turnover helps repair microscopic damage and adapt bone to the loads placed on it, which is part of why weight-bearing activity and healthy bone turnover matter as you age.
Osteons are tiny cylinders of bone tissue that make up the dense outer shell, affecting fracture resistance.

WordOsteons wrap around a central canal carrying blood vessels and nerves. Curious what that canal actually does to keep bone tissue alive.
