Pathologic fracture
Also called: pathological fracture
What it means
A pathologic fracture is a bone break caused by an underlying disease weakening the bone, not by a major injury or trauma.
If your bone breaks easily, it may mean an underlying condition like osteoporosis or another disease needs to be found and addressed.
A pathologic fracture happens when a bone breaks because it was already weak, rather than from a hard fall or big impact. Osteoporosis is a common cause, but other things can weaken bone too, including bone metastases, multiple myeloma, Paget's disease, osteomalacia, or benign bone cysts. The break may happen during normal activities like turning, lifting, or stepping off a curb.
Doctors usually investigate why the bone broke, not just fix the break itself. This can mean imaging, blood tests, or sometimes a bone biopsy to find the underlying cause. Treatment depends on what's driving the weakness — it might involve stabilizing the bone surgically and also addressing the disease behind it, such as cancer treatment or osteoporosis medication, decided by the treating doctors.
Pathologic fractures are a signal that something deeper needs attention. If you break a bone without a clear, forceful cause, it's worth asking your doctor whether an underlying condition should be ruled out, since catching it early can guide better long-term care.
An easy bone break can signal an underlying disease, not just bad luck.
