Pulmonary embolism (post-fracture)
Also called: PE after surgery, lung clot after fracture
What it means
A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that travels to the lungs, usually from a leg vein. It's a known risk after a fracture or orthopedic surgery because being still for a while makes blood more likely to clot.
It's a serious, sometimes life-threatening complication of fracture recovery, so understanding the risk helps you and your care team watch for warning signs early.
When you break a bone, especially a hip, pelvis, or leg bone, or have surgery to fix it, you often move around less for a while. Less movement slows blood flow in the legs, which makes it easier for clots to form in the deep veins. This is called a deep vein thrombosis. If part of that clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, it becomes a pulmonary embolism.
Symptoms can include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain that gets worse with breathing, a fast heart rate, coughing, or leg swelling and tenderness. Because a pulmonary embolism can come on quickly and become dangerous, it's treated as a medical emergency, and anyone recovering from a fracture who notices these signs should seek care right away.
To lower this risk, doctors often use a combination of strategies after high-risk fractures or surgery, such as getting people moving again as soon as it's safe, compression devices or stockings, and sometimes blood-thinning medication. Whether and how to use anticoagulants depends on the person's individual risk factors, and that decision always belongs to the surgeon or prescribing doctor, not something to decide on your own.
A clot can travel to the lungs after a fracture because staying still makes blood more likely to clot.
