Rib fracture
Also called: broken rib
What it means
A rib fracture is a crack or break in one of the bones that make up the rib cage. It's usually caused by a direct blow to the chest, a fall, or sometimes severe coughing.
In older adults, a rib fracture from a minor bump or fall can be a sign of weaker bone, and it matters because it affects breathing and recovery more than people expect.
A rib fracture happens when one of the curved bones protecting your chest cracks or breaks. Most of the time this comes from trauma, like a fall, a car accident, or a hard hit to the chest. But in someone with weaker bones, even something small, like a strong cough, a hug, or a minor bump, can be enough to crack a rib. When a fracture happens without much force, doctors call that a fragility fracture, and it's worth asking why the bone broke so easily.
Rib fractures are painful, especially with breathing, coughing, or moving. Pain can make people breathe shallowly, which raises the risk of lung problems like pneumonia, so staying as mobile and breathing deeply as is tolerable is usually encouraged during recovery. Most rib fractures heal on their own over several weeks without surgery, since ribs are hard to put in a cast. Treatment mostly focuses on pain control and keeping the lungs clear.
If a rib breaks from low-impact trauma, it can be a signal worth discussing with a doctor, since it may point to reduced bone density. A bone density test, such as a DEXA scan, can help clarify whether osteoporosis or osteopenia is contributing, and your doctor can guide next steps based on your overall fracture risk and health history.
A rib fracture from a minor fall can signal weaker bone and affects breathing and recovery more than expected.
Where this leads
WordA rib fracture from a small bump fits a pattern doctors watch for. Curious what term covers these low-trauma breaks and why they matter beyond the break itself?
