What it means

Sarcopenic obesity is having too much body fat along with too little muscle mass and strength, often at the same time.

Why it matters for your bones

Low muscle plus high fat raises your risk of falls, fractures, and faster bone and muscle loss as you age.

Sarcopenic obesity happens when someone has both a high level of body fat and a low level of muscle mass and strength at the same time. It can be easy to miss because the person may not look "thin" or frail—extra body fat can hide the muscle loss underneath, so it sometimes goes unnoticed until falls, weakness, or mobility problems show up.

This combination is tougher on the body than either problem alone. Excess fat can drive low-grade inflammation that affects muscle and bone, while low muscle mass means less support and shock absorption for joints and less pull on bone to keep it strong. When bone loss is added to this picture, it's often called osteosarcopenic obesity.

It tends to become more common with aging, especially after menopause, and is more likely with inactivity, poor diet quality, or chronic illness. Addressing it usually involves a combination of resistance training, adequate protein intake, and attention to overall activity levels, ideally discussed with a doctor or physical therapist who can tailor a plan to your situation.
