What it means

Sedentary behavior is spending most of your time sitting or moving at low intensity, which gives your bones little reason to stay strong.

Why it matters for your bones

Years of sitting and low-intensity movement can gradually thin bone architecture because your skeleton never gets the strain signal it needs to stay strong.

Sedentary behavior means spending most of your day sitting or moving only at low intensity, with little to no weight-bearing exercise. Your bones respond to the demands you place on them. When they rarely experience meaningful mechanical strain, the signal that tells your osteocytes to build or maintain bone simply doesn't arrive. Over years, this can lead to gradual thinning of bone architecture - not from disease, but from insufficient demand on the skeleton.

This matters because a bone density test alone can't tell you why your numbers look the way they do. Two people can have the exact same DEXA result for very different reasons. One person's low density might come mostly from a sedentary lifestyle, which is highly modifiable through changes in daily activity. Another person's identical score might be driven by an underlying medical condition, steroid use, or a nutrient deficiency, which needs a different kind of attention entirely.

Figuring out which story fits you is what turns a test result into something useful. Sedentary living is one piece of the puzzle, and it's a piece you have real influence over, separate from the medical factors that sometimes drive bone loss.
