Short bone
Also called: short bones
What it means
A short bone is a roughly cube-shaped bone, like those in the wrist and ankle, that's about as wide as it is long.
Short bones like those in your wrist contain a lot of spongy bone, which can be an early place bone loss shows up.
Short bones are roughly as wide as they are long, giving them a cube-like or blocky shape. The wrist bones (carpals) and ankle bones (tarsals) are classic examples. Instead of having a long shaft like an arm or leg bone, they're made mostly of spongy trabecular bone on the inside with just a thin outer shell of cortical bone.
This design isn't about moving fast or bearing heavy loads directly — it's about stability and absorbing stress while still allowing some give. Short bones work together in clusters, gliding against each other slightly to help your wrist or foot handle twisting, gripping, and weight shifts without breaking.
Because short bones are rich in trabecular bone, they can be more sensitive to the bone loss that comes with aging or osteoporosis, similar to the spine. Wrist fractures (often involving nearby bones like the distal radius) are a common early sign of weakening bone, which is why doctors pay attention to this area when assessing fracture risk.
Cube-shaped short bones in your wrist hold plenty of spongy bone, often an early spot for bone loss.
