Spinal flexion avoidance
Also called: avoid forward bending osteoporosis, no spinal flexion
What it means
Spinal flexion avoidance means limiting forward bending from the spine, especially with twisting or lifting, to reduce strain on weakened vertebrae.
If your spine bones are fragile, repeated or forceful forward bending may add extra pressure that some experts think could raise fracture risk.
People with osteoporosis or a spinal compression fracture are often taught to avoid forward bending from the spine itself, especially bending combined with twisting or lifting. The idea is that a rounded, flexed spine puts more compressive force on the front of the vertebral bodies, which may already be weaker, raising the theoretical risk of a wedge-shaped compression fracture.
Instead of bending at the waist, this approach teaches bending at the hips and knees, keeping the back straighter (a 'hip hinge'), and using the legs to lift or reach down. Everyday movements like tying shoes, loading a dishwasher, or picking something off the floor are adapted using this hip-hinge pattern.
This is a precaution, not a guarantee against fracture, and it isn't needed by everyone with low bone density. A physical therapist or doctor can assess your individual spine health and movement patterns to decide whether flexion avoidance, posture training, or back extensor strengthening makes sense for you.
Forward bending, twisting, or lifting can add extra pressure on already fragile spine bones.
Where this leads
WordCurious what actually happens if that strain goes too far? A vertebral compression fracture shows how a weakened spine bone can collapse or flatten.
