Spondylolisthesis
Also called: vertebral slippage
What it means
Spondylolisthesis is when one spinal bone slips forward out of place over the one below it, most often in the lower back.
If you have weaker bones or spine changes with age, this slippage can add to back pain or nerve symptoms that affect movement and daily comfort.
Spondylolisthesis happens when one of the bones in your spine (a vertebra) slips forward out of place over the vertebra below it. It most often occurs in the lower back, or lumbar spine, and can result from a stress fracture, wear-and-tear changes in the joints and discs, or a defect in the bony ring that normally holds vertebrae in alignment.
It is a structural problem with joint and disc mechanics rather than a bone density disease, though weakened bone or an existing compression fracture can sometimes contribute to instability. Symptoms range from none at all to low back pain, stiffness, or nerve-related pain, numbness, or weakness running down a leg if the slipped vertebra narrows the space around spinal nerves.
Diagnosis is usually made with spine X-rays, sometimes alongside CT or MRI to check nerve involvement. Treatment depends on severity and symptoms, and can include physical therapy, activity modification, bracing, or surgery such as spinal fusion in more advanced cases. Any decisions about treatment should be made with your doctor based on your specific imaging and symptoms.
Weaker bones can let a spinal bone slip forward, adding to back pain or nerve symptoms.

WordYou just read how a slipped vertebra can cause pain and nerve issues. Curious how a collapsed spinal bone from weak bone looks instead of a slip?
