Surgical menopause
Also called: menopause after hysterectomy, induced menopause
What it means
Surgical menopause is menopause caused by removing both ovaries, which stops estrogen production immediately instead of gradually, often leading to faster bone loss.
Sudden estrogen loss from ovary removal, especially before age 45, can speed up bone loss and raise fracture risk earlier in life.
Surgical menopause happens when both ovaries are removed (bilateral oophorectomy) before a woman reaches natural menopause. Unlike natural menopause, where estrogen declines gradually over several years, surgical menopause causes an abrupt drop in hormone levels overnight. This sudden change tends to cause faster bone loss than the gradual kind.
Because the drop-off is so sudden and happens at a younger age than typical menopause, the skeletal impact can be more serious. Doctors generally consider anyone who loses ovarian function before age 45, whether from surgery or another cause, to need closer attention to bone health going forward, including a baseline look at bone density.
Hormone replacement is often discussed in this situation, with guidance generally supporting it at least until the age natural menopause would have occurred, since it may help bone, heart, and brain health. Any decision about starting, continuing, or stopping hormone therapy belongs to you and your prescriber, based on your full health picture.
