What it means

The vestibular system is the part of your inner ear and brain that senses motion, head position, and balance. It helps keep you steady and upright when you move, turn, or change position.

Why it matters for your bones

A well-working vestibular system helps you avoid falls, and falls are one of the biggest causes of fractures in people with weaker bones.

The vestibular system sits inside your inner ear, alongside tiny fluid-filled canals and structures that detect when your head moves or tilts. It sends constant signals to your brain about where your body is in space, which your brain combines with input from your eyes and the sensors in your muscles and joints to keep you balanced.

As people age, vestibular function can decline, sometimes causing dizziness, unsteadiness, or vertigo. This matters a lot for bone health because poor balance raises the risk of falling, and a fall onto a hip, wrist, or spine can cause a fragility fracture, especially if bone density is already low.

If you notice frequent dizziness, spinning sensations, or trouble staying steady, it's worth mentioning to your doctor, since vestibular problems are often treatable. Balance training, tai chi, and dual-task exercises are commonly used to help support steadiness, alongside addressing vision, medications, and home safety as part of a broader fall-prevention approach.
