What it means

A walker (or walking frame) is a hand-held support frame, sometimes with wheels (rollator), that helps people stand and walk more steadily and safely.

Why it matters for your bones

Using the right mobility aid can lower your risk of falling, which matters a lot since falls are a leading cause of fractures in people with weaker bones.

A walker is a four-legged or wheeled metal frame you hold onto while walking. Rollators are walkers with wheels, hand brakes, and often a seat, letting you move more smoothly without lifting the frame each step. A standard walker without wheels needs to be picked up and placed forward with each stride, which gives more stability but is slower and takes more arm strength.

A cane offers less support than a walker but can still improve balance, especially for people with mild unsteadiness or weakness on one side. Choosing between a cane, standard walker, or rollator usually depends on your strength, balance test results, and how much support you need, something a physical therapist or doctor can help assess.

Using a mobility aid isn't a sign of giving up independence — it's a tool that keeps you moving safely. After a fracture or a fall, or if balance testing shows you're at higher risk, a walker can reduce the chance of another fall while you rebuild strength and confidence through balance and resistance training.
