What it means

Zinc is a mineral that helps the cells which build new bone, osteoblasts, use the enzymes they need to do their job.

Why it matters for your bones

Your bones depend on a steady supply of zinc to support the cells that lay down new bone, so getting enough matters even though it works quietly in the background.

Zinc is a mineral your bones need because it helps osteoblasts, the cells that build new bone, run the enzymes they rely on to do that job. It works alongside other nutrients, including copper, as part of the supporting cast around calcium and vitamin D rather than as a headline act on its own.

Zinc is found in whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, but those same foods contain phytate, a compound that binds zinc and reduces how much you absorb from that particular meal. This matters most for people whose diet is very limited; for someone eating a varied diet, simple steps like soaking, sprouting, fermenting or leavening grains and legumes cut phytate considerably and make zinc more available.

If you take mineral supplements, it's worth knowing that magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc compete for the same absorption pathways, so taking them all in one mouthful can work against you. Spacing them out, and avoiding pairing supplements with your highest-phytate meal, helps. If you have a diagnosed zinc deficiency, follow a fully plant-based diet, or have a condition like coeliac or inflammatory bowel disease that affects absorption, it's worth discussing your zinc status with a physician or registered dietitian.
