What it means

BMPs (bone morphogenetic proteins) are natural signaling proteins in bone that trigger bone-building cells to form new bone, especially after old bone is broken down.

Why it matters for your bones

BMPs help coordinate the natural cycle of breaking down old bone and building new bone, which keeps your skeleton strong over time.

BMPs (bone morphogenetic proteins) are signaling molecules stored in bone matrix that tell bone-building cells to get to work. When old bone is broken down during normal remodeling, BMPs like BMP-2 are released from the matrix and act as a 'coupling factor,' helping trigger the next phase where osteoblasts lay down new bone. They work alongside other signals such as TGF-beta and IGF-1.

At the cellular level, BMPs attach to receptors on osteoblasts and switch on proteins called Smad1/5/8, which team up with RUNX2 (a master gene for bone formation) to turn on bone-building genes. This happens alongside other pathways activated by mechanical loading, like the Wnt and MAPK/ERK pathways, which is part of why physical loading on bone tends to trigger a broader, more coordinated building response than any single signal alone.

For your own bones, BMPs matter because they're part of the natural machinery that rebuilds bone after it's broken down — a process happening throughout your skeleton your whole life. BMPs are also studied in orthopedic medicine, sometimes used in bone grafting or spinal fusion to encourage bone healing, but any such use is a decision made with your surgeon based on your specific situation.
