Calcium blood test
Also called: serum calcium test, total calcium level
What it means
A calcium blood test measures the amount of calcium circulating in your blood. It's a simple blood draw used to check whether your calcium level is normal, too high, or too low.
Your bones rely on calcium, and an abnormal blood level can point to a parathyroid, kidney, or bone problem worth investigating.
A calcium blood test, also called a serum calcium test or total calcium level, measures how much calcium is in your bloodstream at the moment of the draw. It's a routine part of many standard blood panels and doesn't require special preparation beyond what your doctor recommends.
It's important to know this test mostly reflects calcium regulation, not bone strength. Your body tightly controls blood calcium using hormones like parathyroid hormone and vitamin D, pulling calcium from bone if needed to keep blood levels steady. So a normal blood calcium result doesn't necessarily mean your bones have plenty of calcium — it's possible to have normal blood levels while bone density is low.
Doctors often order this test alongside a parathyroid hormone test, vitamin D test, or kidney function tests (like eGFR) when investigating bone health, fatigue, kidney stones, or unusual lab findings. Abnormal results, high or low, usually prompt further testing rather than an immediate diagnosis. Any concerns about your results, or whether you need calcium supplements, should be discussed with your doctor, since treatment decisions depend on the full clinical picture.
A calcium blood test checks whether your calcium level is normal, revealing possible parathyroid, kidney, or bone issues.
