What it means

The femoral shaft is the long middle part of the thighbone (femur), connecting the hip end to the knee end.

Why it matters for your bones

Keeping this strong, dense part of the femur healthy helps support walking, standing, and everyday mobility without injury.

The femoral shaft is the long, tube-shaped middle section of the thighbone, running between the hip and the knee. It's made mostly of dense cortical bone, which gives it the strength to handle the loads of standing, walking, and running. This part of the femur is one of the strongest bones in the body, but it can still break under high-force trauma like car accidents or falls from height.

In older adults, femoral shaft fractures are less common than fractures at the femoral neck or hip, but they can happen with significant falls or, rarely, as atypical fractures linked to long-term use of certain osteoporosis medications. Any unusual thigh pain, especially before a fracture occurs, is worth mentioning to your doctor.

Because the femoral shaft is mostly cortical bone, its strength depends on bone density and the quality of that outer, compact layer. Weight-bearing activity and healthy bone remodeling over your lifetime help maintain this part of the femur, though no single habit guarantees it won't ever break.
