Growth hormone
What it means
Growth hormone is a hormone, peaking during deep sleep, that stimulates bone-building cells called osteoblasts.
Supporting good sleep, managing stress, and staying active may help your body maintain healthy growth hormone levels that support bone building.
Growth hormone is a hormone that stimulates osteoblasts, the cells that build new bone. It peaks during deep sleep, which is one reason why rest is such an important part of bone health, not just exercise or diet. People who consistently sleep less than 6 hours a night tend to have lower bone density than those getting 7-8 hours, and shift workers with disrupted sleep show higher rates of osteoporosis.
Chronic stress can interfere with this process. Sustained high cortisol levels suppress osteoblast formation, ramp up bone breakdown by osteoclasts, reduce calcium absorption, and interfere with growth hormone release itself. So ongoing stress doesn't just feel bad, it can work against the same hormone your bones rely on for repair.
The good news is that lifestyle choices support healthy growth hormone levels. Regular weight-bearing exercise and resistance training, adequate protein and healthy fats, maintaining a healthy body weight, and limiting alcohol all help. If you're going through menopause or andropause, it's worth talking with your doctor about whether hormone optimization makes sense for you.

Questions people ask about this
Yes — both matter more than most people realize. Poor or short sleep is linked to lower bone density, and chronic, ongoing stress raises cortisol, which actively works against bone-building cells and increases bone breakdown. The good news is that sleep habits and stress management are both things you can influence.
