Growth hormone deficiency
Also called: GH deficiency bones, pituitary bone loss
What it means
Growth hormone deficiency means the pituitary gland makes too little growth hormone, which can lead to lower bone density and muscle mass over time.
Lower growth hormone levels can weaken bone-building activity, making your skeleton more fragile over time.
Growth hormone (GH) comes from the pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain. It helps the body build and maintain healthy bone and muscle throughout life, partly by stimulating a related hormone called IGF-1. When the pituitary makes too little GH, this is called growth hormone deficiency. It can happen in children, affecting growth, or in adults, usually from a pituitary tumor, surgery, radiation, or other pituitary damage.
In adults, low GH and IGF-1 levels are linked to lower bone density and reduced bone turnover, because these hormones normally help bone-building cells do their job. People with growth hormone deficiency may also have less muscle and higher body fat, which can add to fall and fracture risk. Doctors typically check for this with blood tests looking at GH and IGF-1 levels, often alongside pituitary imaging.
Treatment, when appropriate, involves GH replacement given by injection, prescribed and monitored by an endocrinologist. This is a medical decision that depends on symptoms, blood tests, and overall health, and any changes to treatment should always go through your prescriber. Weight-bearing exercise, adequate protein, calcium, and vitamin D are generally supportive of bone health in anyone, but they are not a substitute for addressing the underlying hormone problem.
Too little growth hormone can quietly weaken bone-building activity and lower bone density over time.
Where this leads
WordGrowth hormone supports bone strength indirectly. Wonder about the substance it triggers that directly helps both muscle and bone?
