Hypothyroidism
Also called: underactive thyroid, low thyroid
What it means
Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland doesn't make enough thyroid hormone, slowing down the body's metabolism, including the normal pace of bone remodeling.
Thyroid hormone helps set the pace of bone turnover, so an underactive thyroid can be part of the hormonal picture doctors check when investigating bone loss.
Hypothyroidism means your thyroid gland isn't making enough thyroid hormone, which slows down many body processes, including bone remodeling. Bone is constantly being broken down and rebuilt in a cycle, and thyroid hormone helps regulate the pace of that cycle. When thyroid hormone is too low, this turnover slows, which is generally less damaging to bone than an overactive thyroid, but it still matters as part of your overall hormonal picture.
The standard treatment is levothyroxine, a synthetic thyroid hormone tablet that restores levels toward normal. One detail worth knowing: calcium supplements, iron supplements, and certain acid-reducing medications can block absorption of levothyroxine if taken too close together, so many doctors recommend spacing them by several hours. Any changes to thyroid medication timing or dosing should be worked out with your prescriber, not adjusted on your own.
Doctors typically monitor hypothyroidism with a TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) blood test, sometimes alongside free T4. Because both underactive and overactive thyroid states can affect bone, thyroid function is often checked as part of a broader workup when unexplained bone loss shows up on a DEXA scan. Managing thyroid levels appropriately, under medical guidance, is one piece of supporting your overall bone health alongside nutrition and weight-bearing activity.

An underactive thyroid slows bone remodeling, making it part of what doctors check when investigating bone loss.
Where this leads
WordHypothyroidism means low thyroid hormone. Wondering how the common treatment for it could, at too high a dose, affect your bones?
