Ibandronate
Also called: Boniva, monthly Boniva pill
What it means
Ibandronate is a bisphosphonate drug, sold as Boniva, used to treat osteoporosis by slowing the breakdown of bone.
If your doctor prescribes it, ibandronate works by reducing bone loss, which can help protect bone density as you age.
Ibandronate is a bisphosphonate medication used to treat osteoporosis. It's sold under the brand name Boniva, often as a monthly pill, though an IV version also exists. Like other bisphosphonates, it binds to bone mineral and gets taken up by osteoclasts, the cells that break down old bone, slowing that process down.
By slowing bone resorption, ibandronate helps preserve bone density over time. It belongs to the same drug family as alendronate, risedronate, and zoledronic acid, though those other bisphosphonates have more extensive fracture-outcome trial data backing their use, particularly for hip fracture.
Common considerations include digestive irritation with the oral form, and rare but serious complications like osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femoral fracture, which are mostly linked to long-term use. Because bisphosphonates stay in bone for a long time, some prescribers discuss a 'drug holiday' after several years. Any decision about starting, stopping, or switching should be made with your doctor, based on your personal fracture risk and history.
