Orthostatic hypotension
Also called: postural hypotension, dizzy standing up
What it means
Orthostatic hypotension is a sudden drop in blood pressure when you stand up, which can make you feel dizzy or lightheaded.
It raises your risk of falling, and a fall is often what turns weak bones into a fracture.
Orthostatic hypotension means your blood pressure drops when you move from lying or sitting to standing. Normally, your blood vessels and heart adjust quickly to keep blood flowing to your brain. When that adjustment is slow or weak, blood pools in your legs, blood pressure falls, and your brain gets less blood for a moment, causing the lightheaded feeling.
Common causes include certain blood pressure medications, dehydration, aging blood vessels, diabetes, and some nerve conditions. Standing up slowly, staying hydrated, and reviewing medications with a doctor are typical ways it's managed — any changes to medication should be discussed with the prescriber rather than done on your own.
For bone health, this matters a lot: that dizzy moment is a classic setup for a fall, and falls are a leading cause of hip and wrist fractures in older adults. If bones are already thinner from osteoporosis or osteopenia, a fall from standing height can be enough to break something, so catching and managing orthostatic hypotension is a real part of fracture prevention.
A sudden blood pressure drop on standing can cause dizziness, raising fall risk and turning weak bones into fractures.
Where this leads
WordDizziness on standing is one way balance fails. Curious how actual fainting spells can also lead to sudden, unbraced falls?
