Syncope
Also called: fainting, blackout fall
What it means
Syncope is a brief loss of consciousness caused by a temporary drop in blood flow to the brain, often described as fainting or blacking out.
Fainting can cause sudden, unbraced falls, which raise the risk of fractures, especially in bones weakened by osteoporosis.
Syncope, commonly called fainting or blacking out, happens when blood flow or oxygen to the brain briefly drops, causing a sudden loss of consciousness. It usually resolves on its own within seconds to minutes. Common triggers include standing up too fast, dehydration, heat, certain heart or blood pressure conditions, and some medications.
For older adults, syncope matters a lot for bone health because it often leads to an unexpected, uncontrolled fall. Unlike a trip or stumble, a fainting fall happens with no warning and no chance to brace yourself, which can increase the force and randomness of impact. This raises the risk of fragility fractures, especially at the hip, wrist, or spine.
If fainting happens repeatedly, it's worth discussing with a doctor, since the underlying cause (heart rhythm issues, orthostatic hypotension, medication side effects) may be treatable. Identifying and managing the cause can help reduce future fall risk, which is just as important as bone strength itself in preventing fractures.
Fainting causes sudden, unbraced falls that raise fracture risk, especially in bones already weakened by osteoporosis.
Where this leads
WordSyncope causes sudden falls. Wonder about another cause of falls, a spinning sensation called vertigo, and how it raises fracture risk too?
