Osteoblastogenesis
Also called: osteoblast formation, osteoblast differentiation
What it means
Osteoblastogenesis is the process of forming new osteoblasts, the cells that build bone, from stem cells in the bone marrow.
More osteoblastogenesis generally means more bone-building activity, which plays a role in overall bone health as you age.
Osteoblastogenesis is the process by which the body makes new osteoblasts, the cells that build bone. These cells come from stem cells in the bone marrow and go through several stages before they become mature, bone-forming osteoblasts. This process is balanced against osteoclastogenesis, the formation of the cells that break bone down, so your skeleton stays strong and renews itself over time.
Several signals turn osteoblastogenesis up or down. Mechanical loading from movement and exercise lowers sclerostin, a protein from osteocytes that normally blocks the Wnt signaling pathway. With less sclerostin around, Wnt signaling switches on genes like RUNX2 that push stem cells to become osteoblasts. Muscle also plays a role: signaling molecules called myokines, such as irisin, can support osteoblast formation, while myostatin tends to work against it.
On the other hand, chronic stress and ongoing high cortisol levels can suppress osteoblastogenesis, affect calcium absorption, and increase bone breakdown — similar to what can happen with long-term steroid medication use. This is one reason managing stress and staying active are often mentioned alongside general bone health, though they are not treatments for osteoporosis and don't prevent fractures on their own. Your doctor is the right person to discuss any bone health concerns or medication decisions.
How sure is this?
Graded Established Science: Supported by broad scientific consensus and decades of research. Read each study with its grade in mind. One study is a piece of the picture, not the whole of it.
Osteoblastogenesis creates new bone-building osteoblasts from stem cells, and more of it generally means more bone-building activity.
