Osteopetrosis
Also called: marble bone disease, stone bone disease
What it means
Osteopetrosis is a rare genetic disorder where bones become abnormally dense but are actually fragile, due to osteoclasts failing to break down old bone normally.
Even though it sounds like the opposite of osteoporosis, this 'extra dense' bone is structurally weak and still fractures easily.
Osteopetrosis is a rare inherited condition where the cells that break down old bone, called osteoclasts, don't work properly. Normally, bone is constantly being broken down and rebuilt in a balanced cycle. In osteopetrosis, the breakdown side fails, so bone keeps accumulating without being cleared away properly.
The result is bone that looks dense on X-rays, sometimes called 'marble bone,' but is actually weaker and more prone to fracture than normal bone, despite its density. The bone marrow cavity can also become crowded, which may affect blood cell production. Severity varies widely, from forms diagnosed in infancy to milder forms discovered later in adulthood.
There is no supplement, exercise, or over-the-counter product that changes this condition, since it stems from a genetic problem with osteoclast function rather than lifestyle factors. Management depends on the type and severity and is handled by specialists; anyone with this diagnosis or a family history should work closely with their doctor for monitoring and treatment decisions.
Osteopetrosis makes bone abnormally dense yet still fragile, because osteoclasts fail to break down old bone normally.
