Osteosclerosis
Also called: bone hardening, increased bone density disorder
What it means
Osteosclerosis is an abnormal increase in bone density or hardening, usually seen as a finding on an X-ray or scan rather than a disease itself.
It matters because unusually dense bone can signal an underlying condition that needs your doctor's attention, even though it sounds like the opposite of weak bone.
Osteosclerosis means bone that is denser or more compact than normal, as seen on an X-ray or scan. This can show up as patches of hardened bone or affect a whole bone. It's not a single disease but a finding that can come from many causes, including healed fractures, infections, bone tumors, Paget's disease, osteopetrosis, or chronic conditions like kidney disease.
Unlike osteoporosis, where bones lose density and become fragile, osteosclerosis involves extra bone mineral buildup. More bone isn't automatically healthier bone though - the way it forms matters. In some cases the extra bone is poorly organized and can still be weaker or more brittle than normal, so the bone can still be prone to problems despite looking 'dense' on imaging.
Because osteosclerosis has so many possible causes, doctors usually investigate further with blood tests, imaging, and sometimes a bone biopsy to find out what's driving it. If you've been told you have osteosclerosis, it's worth asking your doctor what's causing it and whether any follow-up or treatment is needed, since the right next step depends entirely on the underlying reason.
Unusually dense bone on a scan can still signal an underlying problem your doctor should check.
Where this leads
WordWondering what else can make bone look unusually dense on a scan? Paget's disease creates disorganized, localized new bone.
