What it means

The piezoelectric effect in bone is the small electrical charge that bone tissue produces when it's bent, compressed, or loaded during movement.

Why it matters for your bones

It's part of how your bones may sense physical stress and signal cells to adapt bone strength over time.

When bone tissue is bent or compressed, its collagen fibers generate tiny electrical charges. This is called the piezoelectric effect. Scientists believe these small electrical signals act as a chemical-free messaging system, helping bone cells sense which areas are under the most physical stress during everyday movement.

This electrical signaling is thought to be one of several ways bone tells its cells where to build up or break down tissue. It works alongside other signals, like fluid movement through the bone's internal canal network, to help bone adapt its shape and density to the forces placed on it over time.

This is mostly a basic-science concept rather than something measured in a doctor's office. You won't get a test for it, and no supplement or device is proven to use this effect to prevent fractures. It simply helps explain, at a cellular level, why mechanical loading matters for bone health.
