Turner syndrome
Also called: Turner's syndrome bone loss
What it means
Turner syndrome is a genetic condition in girls and women caused by a missing or incomplete X chromosome. It often causes the ovaries to not work properly, which lowers estrogen and raises the risk of weak, fragile bones over time.
Low estrogen from Turner syndrome means bones may never reach their full strength and can lose density faster, raising fracture risk later in life.
Turner syndrome happens when a female is born with only one complete X chromosome instead of two. It affects growth, heart and kidney development, and very commonly the ovaries, which may not produce normal amounts of estrogen. Since estrogen is essential for building and protecting bone, many women with Turner syndrome never build up as much peak bone mass as they should during their teenage and young adult years.
This creates a double problem: lower peak bone mass to start with, and then ongoing bone loss if estrogen levels stay low into adulthood, similar to what happens after menopause. Over time this raises the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis, and makes fragility fractures more likely, sometimes at a younger age than typical for women without the condition.
Because of this, women with Turner syndrome are often monitored more closely for bone health, which may include bone density scans and blood tests. Hormone therapy is sometimes used to help support bone and overall health, but any decision about starting, adjusting, or stopping treatment belongs to the patient's doctor, who can weigh the individual risks and benefits.
Low estrogen from Turner syndrome means bones may never reach full strength and lose density faster.
Where this leads
WordTurner syndrome lowers estrogen, but how does that actually translate into weaker bones? Estrogen deficiency explains how falling estrogen disrupts the balance between building and breaking down bone.
