What it means

Vitamin D toxicity is when too much vitamin D builds up in the body, usually from very high supplement doses, causing excess calcium in the blood.

Why it matters for your bones

It matters because very high-dose vitamin D supplementation, taken without guidance, can cause health problems rather than help your bones.

Vitamin D toxicity happens when there's far too much vitamin D in the body, usually from taking very large doses of supplements over a long stretch of time. It's rare, and almost never comes from sunlight or food. The main problem it causes is too much calcium in the blood, a condition called hypercalcemia, which can affect the kidneys, heart rhythm, and digestion.

Symptoms can be vague at first, things like nausea, poor appetite, weakness, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and confusion. If levels stay high for a while, it can lead to kidney stones or kidney damage, and in serious cases, calcium can build up in soft tissues. These symptoms overlap with other conditions, so blood tests are needed to confirm it.

Vitamin D is important for bone health because it helps the body absorb calcium, but more is not automatically better. Blood testing, such as a 25-hydroxy vitamin D test, and guidance from a doctor are the safest way to make sure supplement doses are appropriate for you. Any decisions about starting, adjusting, or stopping vitamin D should be made with your prescriber.
